The Black History of Fredericksburg

Jervis Hairston ​has been providing black history tours in downtown Fredericksburg for years.  He has given lectures on the subject at the Rappahannock Regional Library and other venues.

Mr. Hairston joined the Silver Companies in 2003 after a distinguished career in urban planning and zoning administration with the city of Fredericksburg, Virginia. As Director of Planning and Community Development, he served as the city’s chief planner for 23 years. With the Silver Companies for nearly 13 years, Jervis has worked primarily with jurisdictions in the Fredericksburg region, metropolitan Washington, D.C area and in other states assisting in the planning, entitlement and permitting of residential subdivisions and mixed-use projects. Jervis holds a Masters Degree in City Planning from the University of Virginia, where he serves as an adjunct professor.

Janel Donohue is President of Rappahannock United Way.  In this role, she is responsible for providing visible, active and effective leadership for Rappahannock United Way and our community.  She is focused on achieving community results around RUW’s focus areas in Education, Income and Health and ensuring RUW provides opportunities to give, advocate, and volunteer in our local community.

Janel’s favorite pastime, other than spending time with her children, is sharing inspirational stories that motivate people to be the best they can be.

Sarah Walsh is Vice President of Community Impact.  In this role, she provides leadership and assistance for achieving goals related to RUW community impact strategies, initiatives and activities. Sarah manages RUW volunteer and advocacy efforts to support community investment strategies and partnerships, identifies, convene and lead collaborative efforts to address priority community issues around RUW focus areas. Provide oversight and leadership to the community investment process, including grantee and program evaluation, and assesses and reports community investment and impact results.

Sarah loves nature and the great outdoors, spending much of her spare time traveling, practicing yoga, and running with friends. Sarah also loves advocating for homeless pets in our community.
